Creative Solutions Restores A Flood-Affected Playground And Moves On To A LKR 2bn National Project

When the floods hit the western coast of the island in May, Creative Solutions was one of many companies that immediately jumped in to help. They collected rations and kept in close contact with the rescue centres to identify the items necessary for immediate relief.

They also thought long-term. Knowing that there would be a lot of work left to do once the floods receded, they collected donations and dedicated them to a cause: restoring the playground of Samudradevi Balika (girls’ school) in Ambathale.

“My mother-in-law, Mrs. Nelanjani Chandrasekara, used to work in that school,” said Creative Solutions’ Senior Software Engineer Dilhari Bangamuwage. “When she checked the situation at the school, we learned that it was badly affected. I told my colleagues at Creative Solutions about it and they gave me their fullest support.”

Dilhari, Tech Lead Amila Kitto and Administration Manager Shalika Wijayarathne took leadership. They initiated the playground restoration project with a humble budget and a team of a dozen colleagues who even at times brought their spouses and extended families to help.

According to Amila, the playground project made them “realise that most companies and people tend to underestimate their power to make a difference.” The work we did on that field with our own hands showed us that each one of us has the power to make a difference. Every act of kindness, no matter how small or large, matters.”

The team spent several weekends on the field, doing tasks that had been alien to them such as wall reparation and mural painting. According to a team member Gihani Ranasingha they would come in during the hottest times of the day and spend hours under the scorching sun.

“We usually spent five to seven hours sweating and panting in the sun and dust, but we were so happy to be there,” she said. “We had a purpose, so we invested ourselves fully.”

The project that started in early August was completed by mid-September. On September 15, Creative Solutions’ team headed by Director Sushena Ranatunga officially handed over the restored playground.

At the school, they were ceremoniously greeted by a marching band and teachers who lead them to the entrance of the field they had restored. What once was a ravished land with rusted swings and flood-damaged walls, was now a colourful playground protected by a tall fence and sealed with a festive bow. The girls of Samudradevi Balika performed an elaborate ceremony in Creative Solutions’ honour that left the team in awe.

“We were incredibly proud of the work we did,” said Shalika. “The girls’ warm welcome told us that we’d done a good job. And when the ribbon was cut and they ran into the field, we knew that our work has made a difference to the school days and memories of hundreds.”

Inspired by the success at Samudradevi Balika, Creative Solutions CSR efforts continue.

The company is currently teamed up with Sri Lanka College of Paediatricians to propel Little Hearts – a nationwide project aimed at raising LKR 2 billion for the construction of a hospital wing at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for the critically ill children.

“The happiness we saw on that playground made us realise that we have a lot to give to the community that has given us so much already,” said Sushena.

“Creative Solutions has been growing significantly lately, so we decided to grow our CSR efforts as well,” Sushena added. “Our next project, Little Hearts, is enormous and will impact the entire nation for generations to come.”

Soul Coffee introduces Coffee Bags – for freshly brewed coffee on the go

Soul Coffee, Sri Lanka’s premier handcrafted coffee supplier, recently introduced their latest innovation, coffee bags, to the country. The first product of its kind in the market, the specially designed coffee bags conveniently brew in the cup with no residue or clean up needed afterwards. Soul Coffee Bags are for lovers of fresh, flavourful coffee looking for the convenience of brewing coffee anywhere, anytime.

Soul Coffee Bags use ground Arabica beans grown in the highlands of Sri Lanka for a velvety smooth coffee with faint notes of almond, individually wrapped for a rich, flavourful taste and floral aroma. Each coffee bag contains 100% freshly ground coffee which need only be placed in a cup and boiling water added to it, for it to brew a richly aromatic cup of coffee with a fully developed flavour profile.

“There is a very obvious need in the local market for a product like this,” noted Founder & CEO Rinosh Nasar. “If you want good fresh coffee you need to either buy your own coffee machine or spend some time to prepare and filter the coffee. Soul Coffee Bags are for our customers who want great, fresh coffee fast. It’s very easy to make and you can use them anywhere – at home, at work and even while traveling.”

Soul Coffee entered the market in 2014 with the promise of providing handcrafted coffee sustainably sourced from the highlands of Sri Lanka. In starting this endeavour Rinosh was influenced by his childhood, having grown up drinking coffee plucked from the garden of his family home, and the start-up culture he experienced during his travels. The ethically conscious brand sources coffee beans from dedicated smallholder farmers in Kandy, Bandarawela, Haputale and other hill country regions, which they package and deliver to hotels, cafes and retail outlets across the island within 48 hours of roasting to ensure integrity of flavour. In this way, the 200-year legacy of Ceylon Coffee lives on with Soul Coffee’s choice selection of Arabica Beans, available as Smooth Ceylon, Indulgence, Intense Espresso and now as Soul Coffee Bags.

“I think everyone should be able to enjoy a cup of good quality coffee no matter where they are,” said Rinosh. “Starting Soul Coffee was a way to make this possible. Soul Coffee Bags are taking things a step further in terms of convenience. The coffee is still delicious but now it’s also available in a single serve package, similar to a tea bag that you can take with you anywhere and allows you to brew a good cup of coffee immediately with no hassle.”

Soul Coffee Bags are packed in boxes containing 18 bags of medium roast coffee and are available via the brand’s website at www.soulcoffee.lk. Soul Coffee is also available at ODEL outlets, select Keells Super outlets, Good Market Shop at Lakpahana, Cakery Café, Café Kumbuk, Coffee & Company, and other leading cafes across the island.

Pelwatte Dairy introduces non-fat milk powder for a healthy lifestyle

Leading a healthy lifestyle is no longer a foreign concept to most Sri Lankans as people become more and more aware of health issues that arise from unhealthy daily practices. No longer do we rely on junk food and exercise is not a fad for just the young ones. With more awareness being created on balanced diets and healthy living, there is definitely more demand for products that are healthy and enhance people’s lives.

Pelwatte Dairy Industries Ltd is a name synonymous with high-quality locally produced dairy products that are both nutritional and affordable. Adding to their portfolio of milk powder, yoghurt, salted and unsalted butter, and a variety of ice cream flavors, the dairy producer’s latest entrant is non-fat milk powder which will no doubt be well received by the growing health conscious population.

“A product such as milk powder is a staple product in every household and there is now a huge window in the market for healthy alternatives. Pelwatte Dairy having identified this need will be catering to the growing demand for non-fat milk powder”, says Akmal Wickramanayake the Director Marketing at Pelwatte Dairy.

Non-fat milk powders differ from the average full cream milk powders since the fat is extracted from the milk during the production process. The nutritional values of the product are remarkable. The non-fat milk powder is very dense in nutrients and it will help users indulge in a cup of guilt free coffee or tea whenever you feel like it. The new non-fat milk will also help to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by eliminating risk factors such as high blood pressure and high blood cholesterol levels.

The product will soon be distributed island wide and will be available at selected supermarkets and groceries.

The Emirates Group has announced its half-year results for 2016-17. The Group held steady on revenue, but profit was hit by the double impact of a strong US dollar and challenging operating environment for the airline and travel business.

The Emirates Group revenue was AED 46.5 billion (US$ 12.7 billion) for the first six months of its 2016-17 financial year, up 1% from AED 46.0 billion (US$ 12.5 billion) during the same period last year.

Following one of its best ever half-year profit performances last year, the Group for 2016-17 reported a half-year net profit of AED 1.3 billion (US$ 364 million), down 64%. The Group’s cash position on 30th September 2016 was at AED 14.9 billion (US$ 4.1 billion), compared to AED 23.5 billion (US$ 6.4 billion) as at 31st March 2016. This is due to ongoing investments mainly into new aircraft, airline related infrastructure projects, business acquisitions, and the repayments of bonds totalling AED 4.1 billion (US$ 1.1 billion), loans and lease liabilities.

“Our performance for the first half of the 2016-17 financial year continues to be impacted by the strong US dollar against other major currencies. Increased competition, as well as the sustained economic and political uncertainty in many parts of the world has added downward pressure on prices as well as dampened travel demand,” said His Highness (HH) Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive, Emirates Airline and Group.

He added: “The bleak global economic outlook appears to be the new norm, with no immediate resolution in sight. Against this backdrop, the Group has remained profitable and our solid business foundations continue to stand us in good stead. In the first six months of this year, both Emirates and dnata continued to grow in capability and capacity. Our past investments in product and services are now paying off, enabling us to retain valued clients and attract new customers – reflected in the airline’s passenger growth of 2.3 million. We continue to make strategic investments, because we know we have to work even harder for every customer, and make every dollar spent go even further through innovation and driving efficiency across our business.”

In the past six months, the Group continued to develop and expand its employee base, increasing its overall staff count to over 103,000, a 9% increase compared with 31 March 2016. This was mainly due to recent acquisitions in dnata businesses, and also required support for Emirates’ growing fleet.

Emirates airline
Emirates continues to invest in the most advanced wide-body aircraft to improve overall efficiency and provide better customer experience. During the first six months of the financial year, Emirates received 16 wide-body aircraft – 8 Airbus A380s, and 8 Boeing 777s, with 20 more new aircraft scheduled to be delivered before the end of the financial year. It also retired 19 older aircraft from its fleet with further 8 to be returned by 31 March 2017.

Emirates expanded its global route network by launching passenger services to four new destinations – Yinchuan, Zhengzhou, Yangon, and Hanoi. As of 30 September, Emirates’ global network spanned 155 destinations in 82 countries, with Fort Lauderdale to come online on 15 December 2016.

Operating the world’s largest fleet of A380s and the largest fleet of Boeing 777s, Emirates continues to provide ever better connections for its customers across the globe with just one stop in Dubai.

Overall capacity during the first six months of the year increased 9% to 30.2 billion Available Tonne Kilometres (ATKM). Capacity measured in Available Seat Kilometres (ASKM), grew by 12%, whilst passenger traffic carried measured in Revenue Passenger Kilometres (RPKM) was up 8% with average Passenger Seat Factor dropping to 75.3%, compared with last year’s 78.3%.

Emirates carried 28.0 million passengers between 1 April and 30 September 2016, up 9% from the same period last year. The volume of cargo uplifted remained stable at 1.3 million tonnes, a solid performance in a challenging air freight market.

In the first half of the 2016-17 financial year, Emirates net profit is AED 786 million (US$ 214 million), down 75%, following one of the airline’s best half-year performances during the same period last year.

Emirates revenue, including other operating income, of AED 41.9 billion (US$ 11.4 billion) was slightly down by 1% compared with AED 42.3 billion (US$ 11.5 billion) recorded last year. This is due to the unfavourable currency environment – where the US dollar continued to strengthen against most other major currencies; and increased competition resulting in lower average fares. The airline was also impacted by currency devaluation and hard currency shortage in some African countries, as well as dampened travel demand due to the ongoing economic malaise and looming security concerns across major markets in its network.

Emirates operating costs grew by 5% against the overall capacity increase of 9%. On average, fuel costs were 10% lower compared to the same period last year. However, fuel remained the largest component of the airline’s cost, accounting for 24% of operating costs compared with 28% in the first six months of last year.

dnata
dnata continued to strengthen its global businesses which now span 83 countries. In the first half of 2016-17, dnata’s international operations accounted for over 67% of its total revenue.

dnata’s revenue, including other operating income, is AED 6.0 billion (US$ 1.6 billion), a robust 14% increase compared to AED 5.2 billion (US$ 1.4 billion) last year. This solid performance was underpinned by the consolidation of dnata’s recent acquisitions in its ground handling businesses in Europe and Americas. Overall profit for dnata was down slightly by 1% to AED 549 million (US$ 150 million), mainly due to the impact of the strong US dollar on currency repatriation from its international businesses, and also due to start-up investment costs in some of its new acquisitions.

dnata’s airport operations remained the largest contributor to revenue with AED 3.1 billion (US$ 843 million), a 31% increase compared to the same period last year. Across its operations, the number of aircraft handled by dnata increased significantly by 75% to 297,721, and it handled 1.2 million tonnes of cargo, up 28%, reflecting the new businesses acquired, as well as an increase in traffic at Dubai International airport over the same period last year.

dnata’s travel division contributed AED 1.5 billion (US$ 404 million) to revenue, down 13% from the same period last year. The division’s underlying net sales decreased by 14% to AED 5.3 billion (US$ 1.4 billion), illustrating the impact of economic uncertainty and increased price competition in the travel and tourism industry.
dnata’s flight catering operation, contributed AED 1 billion (US$ 286 million) to its total revenue, up 3%. The number of meals uplifted was at 34.2 million meals for the first half of the financial year, up 5% compared to last year’s figure of 32.7 million.

Lotus Hydro Power PLC, now consists of four mini hydro plants, with a total installed capacity of 4.9 MWp. Lotus is planning to acquire few more existing Hydro power plants, and consolidate its market further.
