Amãna Bank continues its service towards Children at Kalubowila Hospital

As part of its continued CSR focus towards Children, Amãna Bank made another valuable contribution to the Children’s Ward (15B) of the Colombo South (Kalubowila) General Hospital by donating acute medical equipment. The donation was made by the Bank’s Chief Executive Officer Mohamed Azmeer to the Director of the Colombo South Teaching Hospital Dr. Asela Gunawardena in the presence of the Bank’s CFO Ali Wahid, Vice President Business Banking Amrit CanagaRetna along with the participation of consultant doctors, nurses of the ward and staff of the Bank.

Having taken up the responsibility in 2006 to maintain the Children’s Ward, Amãna has assisted the requirements of the ward including providing of medicines to facilitate the timely treatment of the patients, partitioning, colour washing, repairs as well as donation of IT equipment.

Commenting on the occasion, Amãna Bank’s Chief Executive Officer Mohamed Azmeer said, “We are privileged to continue this bond with the Kalubowila Teaching Hospital and are committed to do our best for the betterment of Children in line with our CSR focus. We believe this equipment will be of much support for the ward in carrying out its good work more efficiently.”

Also sharing his thoughts Dr. Gunawardena said, “We are very happy to note the continuous commitment of Amãna Bank towards the hospital and the children’s ward for which we are truly thankful. They have understood the significant role we play in society and have always extended a helping hand to meet the necessities of the children’s ward during the last 10 years”

The Bank also presented a gift pack to all children admitted to the ward, in order to put a smile on their faces.

The IASL brings insurers from all over the world together at the 12th Annual International Microinsurance Conference

The Cinnamon Grand in Colombo seemed extra alive over the past few days as Sri Lanka hosted the 12th International Microinsurance Conference. From the 15th to the 17th of November, more than 400 insurers from over 50 countries and Sri Lanka gathered to share their views and ideas on the topic of insurance and the development of microinsurance.

Initiated in 2005 by the Munich Re Foundation and the Microinsurance Network, the purpose of the conference lies in providing insurers, re-insurers, insurance/re-insurance brokers, micro credit agents, insurance regulators, international donor agencies as well as organizations like the World Bank Group and ILO, from all over the globe with a suitable platform to meet, share ideas and experience while learning new and innovative methods to further develop the concept of microinsurance in their own countries. As Mr. Thomas Loster, the Chairman of the Munich Re Foundation stated at the opening ceremony, “We are devoted to aiding those most vulnerable, the poor”.

The opening ceremony took place at 2.00 pm on the 15th of November in the Oak Room of the Cinnamon Grand with the Honorable Minister of Finance, Mr. Ravi Karunanayake taking on the role of Chief Guest and the Chairperson of the IBSL, Mrs. Indrani Sugathadasa attending as Guest of Honor.  Stepping up to the microphone Mr. Dirk Perera, the President of the IASL expressed his absolute pleasure to welcome the gathering to the conference as according to him, “Microinsurance goes to the very heart and purpose of our business”. Mr. Perera also thanked the Munich Re Foundation and the Microinsurance Network for the confidence they have shown by selecting the IASL to host the International Microinsurance Conference for the year 2016 and for the support both organizations have rendered in the organization of the prestigious event.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Loster graciously thanked and acknowledged the contributions made by the IASL since the inception of the conference and stated that he was confident that the Sri Lankan insurance industry was ready to take on a leading role in the global insurance market. The Chairman went on to thank the Microinsurance Network for their support in the endeavor. “Insuring the poor against climate change is one of the matters for which this conference is striving to find solutions,” added Mr. Loster. Mr. Michael McCord, the President of the Microinsurance Network stated that the conference had already proven to be most exciting. In his speech, Mr. McCord placed special emphasis on the necessity of trust between insurer and customer and encouraged all those gathered to learn from the conference and apply those teachings to their own work.

Mrs. Indrani Sugathadasa warmly welcomed all those gathered to the 12th International Microinsurance Conference, adding that it was a great leap forward for the insurance community of Sri Lanka to host such a popular international event. Mr. Rohan Sachdev, EY’s Global Insurance Emerging Market Leader, delivered the keynote address during which he discussed the concept, gaps, benefits and aspects of microinsurance.

Chief Guest, Minister Karunanayake was most pleased by the efforts and initiatives of the IASL, the Munich Re Foundation and the Microinsurance Network in holding such an important conference on microinsurance. “I am pleased to note that sustainability has come into focus which we took into account while drawing up the Sri Lanka national budget proposal this year. It is my fervent wish that the conference commencing today will bring in greater benefits for the industry and more opportunities for the beneficiaries, the lower income citizens thus making them inclusive”. The minister further went on to state, “The professionalism of the organizers is clearly depicted by the objectives enumerated which will hopefully provide the correct foundation to ensure that the 12th Annual International Microinsurance Conference held during the next few days in Sri Lanka will be the most valuable we’ve held in the recent years”.

The IASL, the Munich Re Foundation and the Microinsurance Network were joined by the IBSL as a co-host and J.B Boda as the gold sponsor of the conference.

In addition to the main event, a pre-conference workshop organized by ILO and was held on the 14th of November at Cinnamon Grand, based on the topic, “Managing Microinsurance Distribution & Building Sustainable Agriculture Insurance”. The Annual General Meeting of the Microinsurance Network was held on the 18th of November while the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS) hosted their financial inclusion working group and draft group on the use of Digital Technology in conjunction with the conference.

Emirates welcomes new generation A380 and Boeing 777 aircraft to its fleet

Emirates has begun taking delivery of its new generation Airbus A380 and Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. The first of the new generation A380s was delivered this month as Emirates’ 85th A380. The first of its new generation Boeing 777-300ER aircraft is expected to be delivered later this month and will feature upgraded Business Class seats amongst other features.

These new aircraft reflect Emirates’ continued investment and commitment to flying a modern, environmentally –friendly fleet and providing its customers with a superior level of comfort and safety.

New generation Emirates Airbus A380
In addition to its iconic Onboard Lounge and First Class Shower Spa, the new generation Emirates A380 – 388Q will have several new features including a new seat configuration. This is the first of seven expected to be delivered this fiscal year, with 51 more on order. With the relocation of the crew rest area, there will be 25 additional seats in Economy Class, making it a total of 426 seats on the lower deck. First and Business Class seats will remain at 14 and 76 respectively.

Among the features is an elegant new design in the Business Class cabin with a higher ceiling to create a more spacious and luxurious feel for customers. Overhead cabin lockers on the new A380 aircraft will be concentrated in the middles aisles and will be 28% larger in volume.

The next generation A380s are expected to serve more ultra-long haul routes.

New generation Boeing 777-300ER

From end of November, Emirates will begin taking delivery of its new generation Boeing 777-300ER. It will be the first of six this fiscal year and 27 total on order. The new aircraft will feature enhanced Business Class seats which recline to 180-degree fully flat beds of 78 inches in length, an in-seat minibar and the largest inflight entertainment screen in Business Class at 23 inches.

The aircraft will also have an upgraded seat configuration with two additional seats in Economy Class taking the total capacity in economy to 306. The number of seats in First and Business Class will remain the same at 8 and 42 seats respectively.

The lavatories have also been given a fresh look with new wood finish, improved lighting and new designs on the sidewall panel.

These fuel efficient aircraft are expected to have improved environmental performance with 2% lower fuel burn.
100% on-demand entertainment

Emirates’ entire fleet is now made up completely of Boeing 777s and Airbus A380s, as it recently retired the last of its Airbus A330 and A340 aircraft. An all-Boeing 777-and-A380 fleet means that the inflight entertainment offering will effectively be 100% video on demand giving customers full control and choice with up to 2,600 channels of entertainment on its award-winning ice system.

Currently, 85% of Emirates’ fleet of passenger aircraft is equipped with Wi-Fi on board including all A380 aircraft. In addition, 108 aircraft are equipped with live TV, which has up to nine channels of live news and sport.

With close to 90% of customers on Emirates connecting to Wi-Fi on long haul flights, Emirates will continue to meet the increasing demand for connectivity, enabling more aircraft with Wi-Fi and live TV each month.

Commercial Bank’s ‘Arunalu’ supports country’s brightest young students

Twelve of Sri Lanka’s brightest young students have been rewarded by Commercial Bank of Ceylon with nearly Rs 750,000 in scholarships and cash prizes as Sri Lanka’s largest private bank began the disbursement of ‘Arunalu’ rewards to top achievers at the 2016 Year 5 scholarship examination.

Total disbursements are expected to top Rs 5 million under this year’s rewards programme conducted by ‘Arunalu’ – the Bank’s signature Savings Account for Children – which is designed to motivate and support student aspirations.

Among the first recipients of Arunalu scholarships this year were one student placed second in the island at the examination and four others placed third in the island. The five students, by virtue of being Arunalu account holders, will receive a total of Rs 467,500 in monthly instalments of Rs 1,500 and Rs 1,000 each respectively, till they turn 18.

The student placed first at the Year 5 scholarship examination received an outright cash grant of Rs 100,000 from Commercial Bank, while six others, comprising of non-Arunalu account holders placed second and third in the island received cash prizes of Rs 50,000 and Rs 25,000 each respectively.

A surprise gift of a laptop with software specially designed for visually affected users was presented by Commercial Bank Managing Director Mr Jegan Durairatnam to a student from Kandy who achieved 181 marks after taking the examination in Braille language.

The Bank said many more eligible Arunalu prize winners will be presented with their prizesat branch level in due course.

Launched in 1991, Arunalu is Commercial Bank’s key savings account for children of the school going age. The cash prize scheme introduced in 1998 is now the largest year 5 Scholarship cash prize scheme in the country.

Arunalu rewards students placed first, second or third at the national, district or school levels, through a three-tiered scholarships scheme. Intended to inspire young students and emphasise the value of good education, Commercial Bank’s Arunalu Savings Account pays up to Rs 382,500 to the top three scorers island-wide at the 2016 Year 5 Scholarship examination, if they have Arunalu accounts in their names.

On this basis, the student or students placed first in the island each receive up to Rs 170,000 in monthly instalments of Rs 2,000 till the age of 18. Similarly, students placed second in the island receive up to Rs 127,500 in monthly instalments of Rs 1,500, while those placed third in the island receive up to Rs. 85,000 in monthly instalments of Rs. 1,000 each.

Additionally, students ranked 1st in their respective districts at the examination receive up to Rs. 50,000 if they are Arunalu account holders, and account holders who are placed first, second and third in their schools receive cash prizes of Rs 10,000, Rs 7,500 and Rs 5,000 each respectively.

In 2013, Commercial Bank’s Arunalu Children’s Savings Account paid Rs 4 million in cash rewards to students placed first, second and third in their respective schools at the Year 5 scholarship examination. In 2014, the total paid out under the scheme increased to Rs 5.3 million and to Rs 5.5 million in 2015.

‘Arunalu’ accounts can be opened for children below 18 years of age at any of Commercial Bank’s branches island-wide.

The only Sri Lankan bank to be ranked among the Top 1000 banks of the world for six years consecutively, Commercial Bank operates a network of 251 branches and 650 ATMs in Sri Lanka. Ritzbury powers 27th Junior National Squash Championship 2016

Ritzbury together with Sri Lanka Squash Federation have made all arrangements to kick off the 27th Junior National Squash Championship 2016 on the 26th November 2016 at the Tamil Union squash courts. Ritzbury, Sri Lanka’s number one chocolate brand manufactured by Ceylon Biscuits Limited (CBL), has once again decided to assist and give a boost up for the country’s junior squash players; uplifting Sri Lankan sports being one of the CSR ethos of the organization.

Considered one of the premier school tournaments of the country, this year’s championship will have a participation of over 300 young players representing various parts of the country. This year’s tournament will feature all regular events, boys and girls under 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, and 19 including few novices events tailor made to attract tyros into the game of squash. It is predicted to have over 350 entries for this year’s tournament. Suggested venue will be at ‘Tamil Union squash courts’ and matches will be held from 3pm to 8pm daily on week days and 8.30am to 8pm on weekends/public holidays. Final events will be held on 03rd December 2016 at 04 pm.

HNB Grameen Donates School Equipment to Kudawewa Vidyalaya Polonnaruwa to mark Universal Children’s Day

HNB Grameen Finance Ltd., recently extended it support to Kudawewa Vidyalaya in Dimbulagala, Polonnaruwa, in connection with Universal Children’s Day. School books, library books, a 32” LED TV and a Sound System were among the items donated by the company.

At the request of the Principal of the school, a name board was also gifted to this underprivileged primary school which houses over ninety children and functions with minimum facilities.

The Principal of the School, Mr.A.G. Bandula Rupasinghe stated that this was the first occasion where an institution has stepped forward to help his school. The parents of these children who live amidst many hardships find it hard to support the development activities of the school. The Principal who is due to be transferred to another school next year, said that his aim was to do his utmost for this school before he leaves. He expressed his warm gratitude to HNB Grameen Finance Ltd., for making a very special donation to his school.

Books of Hope- Join the Dengue Prevention Task Force

Dengue has become a complex disease. During the last 10 months of 2016 alone, over 38,000 suspected dengue cases have been reported to the Epidemiology Unit, particularly from urban areas in Sri Lanka and over 30 people lost their lives in 2016. It affects, by large, a greater number of children and adolescents. Dengue has now evolved from a public health problem to a social problem in terms of the burden, but people hardly take any preventive action, unless it happens to them, or an immediate relative.

So how would you remind people to play their part before it’s too late?

Books of Hope- a heart-touching campaign launched by the Colombo Municipal Council uses books left behind by dengue victims to give a powerful message to those who are reading it now. The timing of the campaign couldn’t have been more apt, as it was launched on the 1st of October, where Sri Lankan’s become even closer to books, marking the beginning of the national reading month while celebrating the World Children’s and Elder’s Day.

Microsoft Partners with Singer to Launch Microsoft’s Office 365 Campaign for the Sri Lankan Consumer Market

Microsoft Sri Lanka announced the launch of the Office 365 campaign for the consumer market at the Singer Lifestyle Fair and Exhibition 2016. Participating at the biggest consumer fair which had footfall of over 1,000 a day, Microsoft engaged the audience in a flash mob which resulted in event attendees pledging to use genuine Microsoft Office software. The campaign highlights the features of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, One note, One drive, etc and illustrates how Office 365 helps improve efficiency and productivity.

“Individuals themselves are more digitally active at home than they are at work therefore our consumer market is as important as our commercial market. In fact, the CEO of Microsoft Satya Nadella announced in April this year that there were projected figures of 22 million consumers and 70 million commercial customers on a global scale. Office 365 for home allows the family to use genuine licenses that are secure and are accessible on 5 pcs, 5 tablets and 5 phones and only costs less than Rs. 1500 per month. The Office 365 campaign will be shown on social media channels, movie theatres, and retail stores such as Singer, Soft logic and Microsoft stores. The software package will be available at Singer and Softlogic outlets island wide as well as the Microsoft online store. The Office 365 home and personal package includes applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Publisher and Access. It has Easy Smartphone access, Skype, additional OneDrive storage of 20 GB and is up-to-date with an easy subscription. Accessible on multiple devices, Office 365 is available for Android, Mac OS and Windows. With constant service updates, Office 365 is a commonly used software that equips customers with the right resources to get any job done.
